David Lemak, MD is certified by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He is fellowship-trained in Sports Medicine and specializes in arthroscopy and joint reconstruction of the knee, shoulder, hip and elbow. Dr. Lemak currently practices at Birmingham Orthopedics Sports and Spine (BOSS) and performs surgeries at Grandview Medical Center. His interest lies within sports medicine, arthroscopy and resurfacing, joint replacement, research and development.
A native of Birmingham, Dr. Lemak is a graduate of John Carroll High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and his medical degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of South Alabama and a one year Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham.Dr. Lemak has participated in the care of many college sports teams including Auburn University, Samford University, Miles College, and Wallace State. In addition, he has been a team physician for Spain Park, Clay Chalkville, and Wenonah High Schools. Dr. Lemak has also cared for professional athletes from the NFL, the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Major League Baseball. He has a special interest in mixed martial arts and professional boxing, taking care of these fighters and injuries specifically related to their sports.Dr. Lemak is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is a board member for ProStart Academy and Find A Dream, both nonprofit organizations that focus on mentoring and developing student athletes on and off the field. He has participated in activities for NFL Europe, numerous screenings and high school physicals for Birmingham area institutions. During his collegiate days, Dr. Lemak served as an algebra tutor for children in inner-city schools and has also served as a little league soccer coach during his medical school training.In his free time, Dr. Lemak enjoys spending time on Smith Lake with his wife, Sara, and children, David Jr. and Sarah. His hobbies include wake surfing, racquetball, fishing and taking his two Neapolitan Mastiffs, Bella and Nina, on hikes. He resides in Hoover and is an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Homewood.
